My thoughts on Death Stranding

The Newly released trailer for Death Stranding, from Hideo Kojima, has the internet going crazy. We now have new plot details, gameplay mechanics, and actual gameplay from this new trailer. In this article I will discuss actual confirmed information about the game, as well as my own theories.

Story

Confirmed:

The main character, Sam Bridges (Norman Reedus), adventures across the treks across the ravaged landscape of the United States, populated with mysterious creatures, on a mission to save mankind from extinction.

From Kojima himself “People have created “Walls” and become accustomed to living in isolation. Death Stranding is a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. It is created so that all elements, including the story and gameplay, are bound together by the theme of the “Strand” or connection. As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to bridge the divides in society, and in doing create new bonds or “Strands” with other players around the globe. Through your experience playing the game, I hope you’ll come to understand the true importance of forging connections with others.

My theory:

I think that Hideo Kojima is going to be telling a story about humanity. What I mean by this is how we are destroying our planet, and that currently we are divided as people. Already in this game we are shown that the world is destroyed, similar to our outlook in real life. Maybe through this game we will learn to forge new connections, and learn the value of standing together in society to prevent global collapse. So far it looks like this game will have some political elements that will mirror out current political climate.

Gameplay

Confirmed:

This will be an open world game that includes multiplayer functions. There will be combat in the game, but its not heavily relied on. When the player dies you are sent to an upside down world filled with water. And, when the player returns to the land of the living, anything that happened before you died will stay. For example, if you died by an explosion, the crater that it made will still be there when you come back. Another mechanic in the game is called “Timefall”. This mechanic is rain that deteriorates everything it touches, like acid rain. The gameplay also encourages exploration and forging your own paths towards objectives, similar to Breath of the Wild. While going on your journey you must manage your supplies and protect them from bandits.

Theory:

I have a strong inclination that this game will have time travel elements of some sort. In the newest trailer it shows scenes of what looks like world war one. With the mechanic “Timefall” it ages everything it touches, what if there is one that brings things back in time.

Death stranding will be released on November 8th, 2019. The cast will feature Sam (Norman Reedus), Cliff (Mads Mikkelsen), Fragile (Lea Seydoux), Mama (Margaret Qualley), Deadman (Guillermo Del Toro), Heartman (Nicolas Winding Refn), Die-Hardman (Tommie Earl Jenkins), Higgs (Troy Baker), Amelie (Lindsay Wagner).

Let me know what you think about the game in comments! And if you have any theories feel free to discuss them!

  1. I personally kind of respect that Kojima just does his own thing, and makes the games he wants to (regardless of how weird) rather than churning out the same cookie-cutter garbage that the AAA industry currently does. His stuff usually incorporates some interesting symbolism/themes as well – so whether this game ends up being a disappointment or not I’m looking forward to it! How can you not be excited for a character literally called Die-Hardman?
